Abstract  In order to design an omnidirectional antenna with simple structure and high reliability, a novel Half Mode Substrate Integrated Waveguide (HMSIW) leak-wave antenna array formed by series arranged dipoles at H wall of HMSIW was presented. The antenna was modeled by using a full-wave electromagnetic simulator. The influence of medium thickness on antenna bandwidth was analyzed and the antenna structure was optimized. Then the antenna was fabricated through a single-layer Printed Circuit Board (PCB) process to verify the design. Wide bandwidth and quasi-omnidirectional radiation pattern were obtained. The proposed antenna kept good radiation performance at 7.3-9.7 GHz frequency range and the gain reached 5.8 dBi. Measured results show the effectiveness of the proposed approach.
